NO entry fee! There is no cost to enter!Contest Description: All entries should fall under the category of original, speculative fiction (e.g. science fiction, fantasy, horror, paranormal, etc.). Entries should be no more than five thousand (5,000) words. There are three levels of entry: (1) grades K-8, (2) grades 9-12, and (3) adult. Entries are limited to authors with no previously paid fiction publications living in or attending school within a 75 mile radius of the Capital District (Schenectady-Albany-Troy) or members of the convention. An editor, an author, and an agent will judge finalists.
All finalists will be notified by telephone no later than August 31. Final rankings will be announced and prizes will be awarded at ALBACON 2000, taking place in the New York State Capital District during October of 2000. Finalists will receive a free membership to ALBACON, publication in a special limited edition collectable chapbook available at ALBACON (one time first American print rights only, all rights reserved to the author; winners will be asked to provide the manuscript in electronic format if possible). [This is to make it easier for ALBACON to layout and print the chapbook.] Winners will also receive gift certificates to ALBACON's Dealers' Room (a showcase for the latest in speculative fiction and other related merchandise). The winner in the K-8 and 9-12 contests will also win a free one-year junior membership to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
Manuscript Format: An official entry consists of three copies of the manuscript. Please send all stories in standard manuscript format (double-spaced on 8½ x 11 white paper, typed on one side of the page). Header information at the top of each page of the manuscript should include: title, page number, and entry level (K-8, 9-12, Adult).
Author's name/personal information may not appear anywhere on the manuscript as entries will be distributed anonymously to readers and judges. Include a cover letter with your name, address, phone number &, if you have one, e-mail address.
Send your submission to ALBACON 2000 Short Story Contest, P.O.Box 2085, Albany, NY 12220-0085, USA with a cover-letter including the name, address, and phone number of the author. Please keep a copy of the manuscript for your records as ALBACON 2000 will NOT be returning submissions.
